When did we stop reading album credits?

The “How the Collapse of CD Sales Crashed the Music Industry” YouTube hosts make a good point that nobody bothers with band member names anymore. When did we stop taking the time to remember them? I don’t know about anybody else but I stopped reading album credits or remembering band member names when the iTunes store appeared in 2003. Who needed to buy whole CDs when you could buy just the best tracks on iTunes.

Fast forward to 2024 and Apple Music. Sure, we have song credits but who bothers with those when you have to tap through submenus to find them. And what about album credits? Nada. Album art is slowly adapting to the streaming age with limited animation layers and text effects, but they feel like half-assed marketing gimmicks. Let’s face it, bands like Alice Cooper knew how to market their stuff back in the day, nothing will be as fun as the inner sleeve paper panties in the School’s Out first pressing. It blew a lot of teenage minds back in 1972, and we had fun deciphering the graffiti album credits. Apple Music song credits and album art are never fun, they’re forgettable.
