JR East killing off Suica penguin character in 2026

2026 was supposed to be a celebration of all things Apple Pay Suica. Not only is 2026 the 25th anniversary of Suica and 20th anniversary of Mobile Suica, it’s also the 10 anniversary of Apple Pay in Japan. Instead we got a funeral notice today from JR East that the iconic Suica penguin character that has been with us since 2001 Suica launch, will ‘graduate’ in the fall of 2026. A nice new mascot will be revealed at that time for a big celebration…we hope.

Goodbye little guy, you’ll be missed

The announcement also offered a few new information tidbits of the upcoming ‘Suica Renaissance’ system update and new app announced back in December 2024. New Suica app will feature a QR / barcode payment feature that removes the current card balance limit of ¥20,000. The new Suica QR code payment balance limit is ¥300,000. Other features include automatic payment with a connected VIEW card, peer to peer transfers and, what else, coupons and other goodies just like another other code payment app (PayPay, Rakuten Pay, dBarai, etc.). If nothing else QR Suica app can finally compete on equal footing with other code payment platform. I look forward to paying city taxes and health insurance with Suica, as long as I get JRE POINT right?

But how does it work?
How this integrates with the current NFC FeliCa based Suica card, both plastic and mobile, is still a mystery. The card itself could be updated but in reality it has to keep the current card balance format limit of ¥20,000 to maintain transit gate compatibility with all the other mutually compatible Transit IC cards (PASMO, ICOCA, SUGOCA, TOICA, etc.). That’s why Suica QR will only ever be a smartphone app feature for store purchases, not for transit. I’m working on a post that explores how QR Suica and NFC FeliCa Suica will work.

It’s a bummer that JR East, who’s Mobile Suica service was utterly transformed by the success of Apple Pay Suica, is retiring the penguin mascot and rolling out a QR payment app just as NFC based Apple Pay will celebrate 10 years in Japan. Let’s hope the Suica Renaissance rollout goes smoothly and we get a decent new mascot in the bargain. Judging from this years horribly incompetent JRE WALLET launch, I’m not holding breath.
